Make your dosha diary

Make your dosha diaryIf you’re among those who have always been experimenting with western fad diets like grape, gluten-free or Paleo in order to seek the right body weight and nutrition balance, it’s time you look for a wellness theory closer to home. Our very own ancient Indian life philosophy of Ayurveda promotes a lifestyle that is in harmony with Mother Nature and leads to overall wellbeing without having to crash diet or hit the gym daily. “Nature provides the ideal harvest for each season to keep you strong, healthy, energised and focused. You may have noticed that our desires are often aligned with foods that nature has provided in season for thousands of years. In winter, you naturally crave soups, nuts, warm grains, and other high fat and protein foods such as meat and fish. In spring, you want salads, berries, and leafy greens — a naturally low-fat diet. And in summer, when the days are long, humid and hot, you require cooling and high-energy foods such as fruits and vegetables, which are a naturally available high-carbohydrate diet,” says chef Narendra Sharma.
The idea of doshas
The ancient practice of Ayurveda believes you’re made up of three different body types that correspond to your physical and personality traits, known as doshas. These are: vata, pitta and kapha, each of which represents two of the five universal elements (a combination of aether, air, fire, water and earth). “You contain varying proportions of each dosha, generally one or two in dominance. Our naturally dominant dosha does not signify imbalance, but rather how – or who – you are in your most healthy, balanced state. Mind-body health and harmony is challenged when any of the doshas become aggravated or imbalanced,” says Ayurvedic physician Dr Shijoe Mathew Anchery. Thus, the trick lies in exploring your physical, mental and emotional health to understand your unique energetic constitution or combination of doshas (the three dynamic living forces) that determines your body type and your current imbalances. Then, go for a diet that helps you bring more balance, energy and peace to your entire being.
