2020 MINI John Cooper Works GP spied testing

Back in 2017, there had been reports that Mini is working on building a new John Cooper Works GP for 2020. This time around, the vehicle was spotted on test at the Nurburgring race track. The track-oriented version of the MINI John Cooper Works gets sporty aerodynamics and quirky design elements. Started as a design study, the 2017 JCW GP concept featured distinctive design highlights in the form of louvered wheel arches and a sporty rear wing.

As seen in images, the test mule continues with most of the design highlights from the concept version. The engine specification is not known for now, however, it is believed that the MINI JCW GP will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates around 295bhp of power. The performance focused vehicle is built using lightweight body construct, roll cage and diffusers.

A production version of the MINI John Cooper Works GP is likely to be showcased at this year’s Frankfurt motor show. The vehicle is likely to go into production in 2020 and will compete against the likes of the Honda Civic Type R and Ford Focus RS. Unfortunately, the production model will be limited to 3,000 units. As for the Indian market, MINI will launch the John Cooper Works hatch in the country on 9 May.
